New’s Paper Analysis

DAILY MAIL–January 27th(front page)

• Under the mask head we have The Plug, this is used to alert the audience about how much rest they are getting or to remind them. It uses the phrase ‘Major new series by a top expert’ , this allows the reader to trust the newspaper by using the word ‘expert’ in the sentence, further illustrating that it is a reliable source.The plug also consists of the words “GREAT NIGHT’S SLEEP”,which is presented in a Sans font making it easy to read;it is also in capital letter drawing attention to the words.The Plug also contains a Jump Line “see pages 26-28”, it encourages the reader to buy the newspaper and to know who to get a great night sleep.
• To the right of the paper we have a central image which is of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant. The heading on the image reads “Sport legend and daughter aged 13 die in helicopter crash” . The editor may have used these choice of words (sport legend)(aged 13)to add effect and emotion onto the reader, by including the age of his daughter it increases the sympathy from the reader by them seeing that she was lots at such a young age, they have used the phrase ‘Sporting legend’ because that was the true representation of him, it also shows the respect the editing team have for the celebrity.
• In the center of the newspaper we have The Headline which states “20,000 SPRING CLEAN HEROES ALREADY!” , the use of the exclamation mark makes it stand out and eye catching, the sentence also seems as if it’s surprising that they have that many people by questioning it with the use of the word ‘already‘. Under the headline we have standfirst this provides more information about the main headline/story.

• The masthead tells us the name of the newspaper which is printed in a red box, the reason for this is to draw attention,it also has a small caption saying “THE HEART OF BRITAIN” meaning it comes from the real view and it has true British values.It also classes as The Plug by having the price of the newspaper and the date.
• The Plug at the top right corner of the newspaper, it gives the paper a more broader aspect and shows the audience/readers that it isn’t just about politics or events happening in the world, the subheading reads “FREE holidays pullout” followed by “20 pages of fab sun breaks at affordable prices” these quotes encourage readers to buy the newspaper by making the idea of going abroad cross their mind, it also states that these holidays are ‘affordable‘ meaning that your income doesn’t matter you can still have a luxury holiday.
• The headline reads “CHARLES’S PLEA FOR MIDDLE EAST PEACE” , it shows the sympathy the royal family have for others and shows that he has to beg for peace, the headline is followed by a quotation “It breaks my heart to see so much suffering& division” this emphasises the situation by the choice of words ‘suffering’ and ‘division’, it lets the reader feels emotion to the situation.Next to the headline we have the Jump line which has a small snip it of the story but encourages the reader to but the newspaper by stating the rest of the story us on pages 4&5.

• The headline “Petulant Prince,” the headline gives connotations of being childish, this is shown through the choice of wording ‘Petulant’.The editor used this choice of word to set an overall theme or idea of the situation that is occurring with Prince Harry and The Queen, it may symbolize the view point of the British Public. The headline is also followed by the splash “NAFF ORF HARRY”, this is placed next to a picture of Harry and Meghan, which automatically draws the readers in due to importance of the royal family in Britain, this also has a little paragraph next to the image explaining some of the story, this is known as the standfirst.
• The Standalone” Lew girl A Paige tuner” the editor has used a play on words by replacing page with Paige because that’s the girls name. They have also included a slight hint to a celebrity Lewis Capaldi who is known as ‘nation’s sweetheart’ which draws the reader in due to the gossip,this is also known as the standalone by having “Love isle PAGES 8-9” causing the public to want to read more about the situation, leading to them buying the newspaper.
• At the bottom left of the newspaper we also have a possibly Standalone “EAT THIN AIR loony diet:page 11”. This little heading may catch the attention of female readers or readers who want to lose weight , it also gives the impression of being and easy way to diet by using the phrase ‘eat thin air’, however is also may come across as controversial due to having no context on what the article is actually about which leads to people buying the paper to read more.
