Steve Neale states that film and it’s genre is defined by two things:
- How much the film conforms to its genres convections and stereotypes. A film must match the genres convections to be identified as part of the genre.
- How much a film subverts that genres convections and stereotypes. The film must subvert convections enough to be considered as unique and not just a clone of an existing film.

The Kiss Of The Vampire subverts the convections of the horror genre, women are present as weak and are shown as powerless, however the film poster of Kiss of the vampire shows dominance of one of the women who is in control of both men in the image.
