Steve Neale

Steve Neal’s theory of repetition and differences. Steve Neale states that genre’s all contain instances of repetition and differences is essential tot he economy of that genre.

Steve Neale states that film and it’s genre is defined by two things:

  • How much the film conforms to its genres convections and stereotypes. A film must match the genres convections to be identified as part of the genre.
  • How much a film subverts that genres convections and stereotypes. The film must subvert convections enough to be considered as unique and not just a clone of an existing film.

Steve Neale’s theory of genre can be applied The Kiss Of The Vampire.

The Kiss Of The Vampire subverts the convections of the horror genre, women are present as weak and are shown as powerless, however the film poster of Kiss of the vampire shows dominance of one of the women who is in control of both men in the image.
